MOVIE POSTER FRIDAY!!!
Today, here are some random films from my child hood. But more specifically, ones I remember seeing at the all and wonderful Drive-In Theater
The Drive-In was an amazing thing. The family would get in the car, put the kids in the trunk to save on ticket prices and park in front of a HUGE movie screen and you'd wait for the sun to go down…Because when the sun was gone, the movies would begin!
The Drive-in's of the 70's were an experience. There was a play ground, you’d always have three movies lined up and the food stand was full service. There was a sense of community there. everyone was friendly, we all said 'Hello' and some one was always ready to help fix your car, free of charge, should it not start after the movie was over.
Before the 70's, the drive in was a freak' in culture. There were specialty nights, costume contests, dances in-between movies, BBQ contests, special guest from the movie you were about to see…Sometimes, the if you were seeing a monster movie, the monster would be lurking by your car while watching the movie!!! Some movies were also mad ONLY for use at a Drive-In. I wish I could back in time to be part of that.
While movie going has advanced in technolgy, the fun's been sucked right out of it. People are also was to self-concious. When you see news reports about, 'People dressing up for a Star Wars' movie, as something new and strange, they forget: The was a common thing a while ago. I remeber 'Creepshow' has 'Dress like a creep and GET IN FREE!!!" and at the premire of 'The Thing' (1982) You got in free it you dressed what you thought The Thing REALLY looked like...
If you have a Drive-In near you, go to it this summer. I mean it! Get you, your friends and go. You will not regret it. You will thank me later. Even if you only one of the three movies is one you don't want to see, you will have a great time watching movies under the stars with friends. Be part of a lost art! Some Drive-In's still have feature nights, in which they'll show classic horror flicks and other oddities.
It's also a great place to make-out...
EVERY WHICH WAY BUY LOOSE
This was a classic. The music. The humor. The beatings. And how anti-Hollywood this film his. Studios begged Eastwood NOT to do this movie, but it was his biggest hit for a long time to come.
AIRPLANE
I declare this the funniest movie ever made. Period.
THE VILLAIN
A forgotten classic with Kirk Douglas and The Terminator. Arnold had no speaking lines in this film. He smiled and looked big. Kirk Douglas COULD NOT KILL HIM!!!
CAT FROM OUTER SPACE
They always started the night with a kids flick. Then it would move into a PG film, then an 'R' for the parents. You were supposed to fall asleep after your kids movie, but like that was going to happen! But be careful, if you fake sleeping, your parents just make start the car…and when the car started, that was it!
FIRST FAMILY
I want this to come out on DVD. Bob Newhart is the President. 'Nuff said.
KING KONG
This was sweet on the Drive in screen. It kept coming back summer after summer. I always looked for it.
ZORRO, THE GAY BLADE
The title sez it all. Classic comedy, back when we could laugh at ourselves. Last of the 'Blazing Saddles' type comedies.
THE STRONGEST MAN IN THE WORLD
Sometimes, you'd get lucky and a string of live action 70's Disney flicks would play. Most of them had Kurt Russell. I really enjoyed "The Computer That Wore Tennis Shoes"!
CHOMPS
My dad hated this movie.
HAWMPS.
He hated this one too…
MUPPET MOVIE
But he liked this one…Who didn't? At the drive in, all your friends were there, so you'd run over three cars and say, 'Look! It's Steve Martin!!!"
MOONRAKER
I think this was the first James Bond film I ever saw…AT THE DRIVE-IN!!!
STAR WARS & SUPERMAN DOUBLE FEATURE!!!

These two together was an amazing night! And this was George Lucas's 'Terrible and unfinished' version that we were not supposed to see!!!
You could have died right there and then, but then you would not have gotten to see their amazing sequels. Remember, back then, movies would go back into theaters again. There was no home video market, so the producers could still make money on the re-releases and teaming them with other films. 'Jedi' was the only one I did not get to see on the Drive-In. For some reason, I remember 'The Other Side Of The Mountain' was popular with 'Star Wars'…Ah well. My Mom would tell me to shut up when I said it was boring…
There are hundreds more I could talk about, but I'll save those for a part 2 sometime...
